This hotel is a 10-minute taxi-ride from Stratford-upon-Avon station and near to the Shakespeare Country sites and the fascinating town of Warwick and its castle.
The driveway entrance is impressive with a sign that says “big posh hotel here” and surrounded by lovely sprawling countryside and the impressive greens of the golf club.
The exterior of the hotel is equally splendid. Built in 1866, standing in 157 acres of beautiful grounds, the Jacobean-style house has the palatial splendour of a classic country house retreat.
Even though the house is architecturally outstanding, for me, it was the landscaped gardens at the back which I enjoyed most most. The views over the surrounding countryside are spectacular. And on the day in June when I visited it was warm with not a cloud in the sky and the perfect place to enjoy an aperitif on the terrace.
It’s not surprising that it is a leading venues for weddings. There was one taking place while I was there and the various garden statuary was being enjoyed by the children playing hide-and seek. I also discover the gardens were used to film the BBC children’s TV series, The Teletubbies!
There can be no complaint about the room size. But although my bathroom was adequate it did a little bit of restoration work.
The Menzies Welcombe Spa is in a separate building just a minute’s walk from the hotel front entrance.
The Spa facilities, which are free to hotel residents, include an impressive indoor swimming pool, a separate external vitality pool, heated loungers and foot spas.
There is also a range of thermal experience rooms; a Finnish Sauna, a Caldarium, a Laconium and a Tepidarium – offering a choice of experiences. We also offer an Ice Fountain to cool down the traditional way and Tropical and Polar Storm Showers for that final invigorating experience.
And with the selection of Clarins and Elemis treatment rooms offering a superb range of therapies and treatments, available for an additional charge, the facilities at the Menzies Welcombe Spa provide the perfect place to relax and unwind after a busy day.
If you would like a more active spa day there is a state-of-the-art gymnasium, aerobics studio and all-weather tennis courts.
The spa uses Clarins and Elemis products. I tried the Welcome Aromatherapy Massage. This is an hour-long treatment which is pure pleasure and helps re-condition the skin with custom-blended oils and creams to detoxify, firm and relax the body. Cost £60 for 1 hour.
Test your skills on the course that played host to the European Seniors Tour Ryder Event in 1998.
This championship golf course is an 18-hole par 70. From your first drive down the wonderful fairways, you’ll discover playing here offers a rather unique golfing experience. At 6288 yards, the Menzies Welcombe golf course is deceptively long. It’s also been designed to include three par five and five par three holes. Why not come and see it for yourself?
