David Bowie was for almost 50 years one of the most recognised and revered artists in the world, his influence transcending music to shape the wider culture of our time. His life as an art collector, however, was something he kept almost entirely hidden from public view. Now, for the first time, this little-known side of David Bowie will be revealed.  Over 400 pieces of fine art and design will be on public display together for the very first time at Sotheby’s London from 1-10th November  ahead of three auctions on 10th & 11th November. During the course of the exhibition, there will be various events and a 24 hour public view, details of which are given below.

FESTIVAL OF TALKS

Throughout the weekend, Sotheby’s will host a series of talks focusing on David Bowie’s inspirations and influence in art, design and fashion. Speakers include…

SATURDAY 5 NOVEMBER

From 11am-noon, KATE CHERTAVIAN, David Bowie’s advisor and curator from 1993 to 2000, will speak with Sotheby’s European Chairman OLIVER BARKER about her memories of working alongside the voracious and passionate collector.

From 1-2pm, leading British producer ROBERT FOX  will discuss the London release of the musical Lazarus with playwright ENDA WALSH, who co-wrote the musical with David Bowie.

From 3-4pm, Novelist WILLIAM BOYD will be in conversation with Sotheby’s Head of British Art, FRANCES CHRISTIE, discussing David Bowie’s role on the Editorial Board of Modern Painters and the infamous “Nat Tate” art world hoax orchestrated by Boyd and Bowie in 1998.

SUNDAY 6 NOVEMBER

From 1-2pm, artist, writer and broadcaster MATTHEW COLLINGS will discuss the themes within the David Bowie collection with BETH GREENACRE, curator of David Bowie’s collection 2000-2016

From 3-4pm Sotheby’s Specialist in 20th Century Design ADAM TRUNOSKE will discuss David Bowie’s Memphis Design collection with JOHANNA AGERMAN ROSS, Curator of Design at the Victoria & Albert Museum and MARTINE BEDIN, designer and Memphis Group co-founder

CHILDREN’S DAY

SUNDAY 6 NOVEMBER 2016, 11AM – 1PM

On Sunday 6th November, Sotheby’s will host a day of activities and games specially designed for children of all ages to enjoy the David Bowie exhibition.

Alongside a balloon man and activity packs, there will be fuzzy felt ‘area’ where children will be able to make their own miniature pieces of Memphis design furniture.

On Friday 4th November Sotheby’s will be open after hours and throughout the night, giving unprecedented access to our Bowie/Collector exhibition.  With a pay bar and DJ for much of the night, as well as guided tours from Sotheby’s specialists, visitors to Sotheby’s New Bond Street galleries will be able to explore David Bowie’s hidden passion and the connections between the staggering range of works in his collection.  Highlights will include Modern British Paintings by Peter Lanyon and Frank Auerbach, cutting-edge Contemporary Art by Damien Hirst and Jean-Michel Basquiat and outlandish Memphis design pieces.
